HETEROTOPIA

Heterotopia is a large-scale sculptural and sonic installation, which simulates the garden environment. The installation consists of plants, which are growing together and are linked to speakers from which the visitors hear the people of Legazpi neighbourghood describing their ideal landscape.
Heterotopia functions partly as a place where wishes are expressed and partly as a laboratory/plant nursery, investigating the visitors’ perception of an “other” environment in relation to actual space and time.

Eleni Papaioannou (1972, Atenas). She has an MA in Art in Context from UdK (University of the Arts), Berlin and a BA in Sculpture (Distinction) from ASFA, Athens. Her work explores the interplay between materiality, sound, and movement in space, in the form of site-specific installations and sculpture.
She has created site-specific pieces in historical locations, such as an air-raid shelter from the Second World War in Germany and a monastery in Valencia, Spain, as well as in urban spaces, where visitors unexpectedly stumble upon her work. The installations function like bodies that expand and attach themselves to their surroundings, redefining the role of each element that forms the work. The sculptural pieces combine different media such as fur, nylon or clay with processed sounds and found objects, creating a kind of three-dimensional collage.
She has participated in several group shows in Germany, Spain and Greece. She lives and works in Athens.
