M.A.D.R.I.D.28045: ARTE EN EL ESPACIO URBANO

Madrid as an urban stage for artistic intervention. Within the scope of a conference open to the public, which offers the possibility for reflection between theorists, professionals in the cultural sector and artists, different propositions for an artistic intervention will be put into practice by a group of artists invited to the Arganzuela district.

M.A.D.R.I.D.28045: ARTE EN EL ESPACIO URBANO aims to bring the practice of artistic intervention in public spaces to the citizens of Madrid with the help of cultural experts and professionals and by initiating artistic actions in the Arganzuela district.
The idea of the project is to establish a connection between public space as a field of social interaction and artistic space (like museums and centres of art), the usual place for cultural interaction, by creating new models for (re)presenting artworks and artistic processes. To this aim, the public and above all the residents of the Arganzuela district will be introduced

to artistic experiences, encouraging reflection about social and economic questions on a local as well as on a global level.
The project consists of two interrelated actions, creating a dialogue between theory, artistic practice and public reception:
1. Conference: ART, PUBLIC? For two days, there will be meetings open to the public, which focus on art in public spaces, analysing different aspects of the topic from various perspectives. The speakers will offer insights on their experiences in other national and international art projects connected with public space.
2. Artistic interventions in public space performed by a group of international artists. The artists have been selected according to the nature of their artistic development in different disciplines such as video art, installation, performance as well as communication and relational processes with an artistic character.
The interventions will promote new forms of artistic expression by means of which the public will be integrated as an active participating element in the creation of the artwork. As a result, individuals will not
on. only be encouraged to communicate with each other, but also to interact with art in everyday situations and places.
The project will open up a dynamic area of reflection about the presentation of artistic processes in a context specifically designed for the dispersion of art (Conference will take place at Intermediae in the former Madrid’s Slaughter house/Matadero), and outside of it (Artistic interventions in different places of the Arganzuela district). It will focus on the reception of art in its different manifestations by certain members of the public, and, in the broader sense, by the citizens of Madrid.
Because of their ephemeral character, photos and videos will document the artistic interventions during the process of their realization and execution. This material will form the basis for the catalogue with a bilingual DVD (Spanish/English). The catalogue will also contain the complete texts of the speakers at the open conferences as well as texts about the artworks produced for the project and additional informati
