ENTREJUEGOS / BETWEEN-PLAYS

With my artwork I try to preserve the collective memory through traditional childen’s games like rope-skipping, marbles, Chinese Jump Rope and tiddly winks, which become staged in public spaces by the residents of the Arganzuela district. The elderly of the cultural centre Casa del Reloj, who will act as transmitters of these traditional games, establish a bridge between the quarter’s past and present. The idea is to surprise pedestrians with an activity, which has almost died out in our cities, and make them think about the changes that have taken place in today’s society. In Arganzuela, all workshops and open spaces have been replaced by residential buildings, while space for free playing has been considerably reduced. All these activities will be documented on video and by photographs, which will give significance to the mise-en-scène of the players, to their faces and their hands grasping the toys

Tamara Arroyo (Madrid, 1972). My work develops according to different concepts. On the one hand, there is the concept of site-specific installation, as in realizing works for a definite space. The final result is a product of the place’s characteristics, its past and my personal experience. I intervene in spaces creating scenes with ephemeral materials (drawings, adhesive tape...) or carry out small actions within them and take pictures afterwards. These pictures serve as a documentation of these interventions but also as independent artworks, establishing an intrinsic connection with their surroundings beyond the specific situation. On the other hand, the search for one’s personal memory and autobiography have led me to return to places of my childhood and youth, and also to create scenographies of places which belonged to my personal memory, although I never got to know them. By means of my artistic work, I create a connection between the past, my personal biography and the present.
